From the Desk of Mayor Mayhew

As Mayor of Southwest Middlesex, I have the privilege of participating in many ceremonial events in our municipality. Over the past eight years, nothing has given me more pleasure than identifying three individuals as Heroes of Southwest Middlesex. Today, I am honoured to recognize and pay tribute to our fourth.

Jacob Thomas of the Southwest Middlesex region is a celebrated Special Olympian who has brought home an array of precious medals around his neck as a reward for his athleticism in Special Olympics over the last decade.

Most recently, he was the recipient of silver medals in golf from the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, held from August 11th to August 15th, 2026, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. His past achievements have included a gold medal in floor hockey at the Canadian National Winter Games. As part of Team Ontario, he has travelled across the country, competing with grace, courage, and a desire to win in selected events.

Jacob is often seen working at the Glencoe Pharmacy, located at 253 Main Street. He is known for his gentle demeanour, politeness and hardworking nature. Beneath this quiet demeanour, lies a competitive and accomplished athlete, whose achievements are nothing short of amazing.

As Mayor of Southwest Middlesex, I wish to respectfully identify Jacob as a “Hero of Southwest Middlesex”. While there are many individuals within our municipality who deserve recognition, Jacob’s accomplishments are nothing short of stellar.

On behalf of Council, administration, staff, and the residents of Southwest Middlesex, I congratulate Jacob Thomas on his outstanding achievements in sport and send best regards and thanks to him and his family.
