The Municipality of Southwest Middlesex is seeking individuals with livestock experience to serve as Livestock Valuers for the 2026-2027 term.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Clerk (or designate), the Livestock Valuer conducts impartial investigations of livestock, poultry, and other eligible animals reported as injured or killed by wildlife under the Ontario Wildlife Damage Compensation Program (OWDCP). The position responds to reported incidents, completes on-site inspections, gathers and documents evidence, prepares the prescribed investigation report, and submits all required documentation to the Clerk for municipal submission to the Province.
The Livestock Valuer represents the municipality and is expected to exercise professionalism, objectivity, confidentiality, and sound judgment while complying with provincial legislation, OWDCP guidelines, and municipal policies.
Key Responsibilities
Respond to reported livestock and poultry death or injury claims within OWDCP timelines.
Conduct on-site investigations and assess evidence to determine whether damage is consistent with eligible wildlife predation.
Complete accurate investigation reports, photographs, field notes, and supporting documentation for municipal submission.
Communicate program requirements professionally with livestock owners.
Remain current with OWDCP legislation, policies, and procedures, and complete required training.
Work collaboratively with municipal staff, producers, as required.
Follow municipal health and safety policies and perform other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of livestock production, animal husbandry, farm operations, and wildlife predation.
- Experience conducting inspections or agricultural field investigations is preferred.
- Familiarity with the Ontario Wildlife Damage Compensation Program is considered an asset.
- Strong investigative, analytical, report-writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to make objective, evidence-based decisions and maintain confidentiality.
- Ontario Class G driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
Strong observation, organization, and time management skills.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Professionalism, tact, and sound judgment in sensitive situations.
Customer service and conflict resolution skills.
Ability to interpret legislation, policies, and program guidelines accurately.
