ABOUT US
The restructured municipality of Southwest Middlesex was incorporated on
January 1, 2001. This amalgamation joined the former Villages of
Glencoe and Wardsville with the Townships of Ekfrid and Mosa.
Southwest Middlesex has a population of approximately 5,900 persons and
approximately 2,300 households (Stats Canada 2006). The are of
land that is found within our boundary is 42,960 hectares.
Geographically, Southwest Middlesex is located in the southwest corner
of Middlesex County and sits approximately half way between London and
Chatham. We share borders with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to
the southwest, the Township of Dawn-Euphemia to the west, the Township
of Brooke-Alvinston to the northwest, the Township of Adelaide Metcalfe
to the north, the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc to the east and the
Township of Dutton-Dunwich to the southeast and the Municipality of West
Elgin to the south.
The municipality has a unique mix of urban and rural planning areas and
supports a large agricultural base along with manufacturing,
institutional and retail business activity. The two major urban
centres in the Municipality are the communities of Glencoe and
Wardsville. Although the remaining areas outside the two urban
centres are predominantly rural there are four (4) existing hamlet areas
including Appin, Melbourne, Middlemiss and Pratt Siding as well as
numerous urban cluster areas throughout the municipality.
One of our most unique features is the Thames River that meanders from
east to west along the southern limit of the municipality. Areas
along the Thames River provide an attractive natural setting of
varied terrain, woodlands and scenic vistas.
Southwest Middlesex is home to pre-school day-care, three elementary
schools (two public and one separate) and one secondary school. We
have an extensive selection of
churches of various denominations and
service clubs are highly prevalent within the community. Some of
those groups include Lions, Lioness, Royal Canadian Legion, Rotary, Oddfellows, Masonic Lodge, Star of the East and 4-H.
Medical, dental, chiropractic, optometry and pharmaceutical facilities
are located within Southwest Middlesex. On our border with Newbury
is Four Counties Health Services with other medical facilities located
within minutes of our community. All of these facilities provide
excellent health care to both our community and the surrounding
communities.
We have a strong recreation ethic in Southwest Middlesex.
Organized sports are available for all age groups. Within our
municipality you will find activities such as baseball, curling, hockey,
golf, soccer, swimming and tennis. We are home to some of the best
recreational facilities available. We are continuously building
our programs to meet future needs.
We are host to several privately operated
Bed and Breakfast locations.
Camping is also available at
Big Bend Conservation Area and (at our
border with Brooke-Alvinston)
A.W. Campbell Conservation Area and
Jefferson Junction Campground.
We welcome you to join us in Southwest Middlesex for a day of relaxation
or for a fulfilled lifetime. This is where we live, work and grow
together! |
