If you are interested in hiking in Middlesex
County, you may obtain copies of the booklet “The Walking Trails of
Middlesex County” at the Municipal Office. This is a wonderful
little booklet jam packed with general hiking information and maps of all
the hiking trails within Middlesex County. Ask for yours today!
There are two Conservation
Areas within the municipality, both of which have superb walking trails that
you and your family can enjoy.
A.W. Campbell Conservation Area – The
Millennium Trail
The Millennium Trail takes
the hiker through a 3.3 km loop around the A.W. Campbell Conservation Area.
The trail traverses deciduous forest, floodplain and meadow and treats
visitors to a host of wildflowers and interesting tree species such as the
blue ash. Several side trails can be taken for shorter walks. The
conservation area includes a campground and the Campbell House Museum (open
for special occasions), and is home to the annual Maple Syrup Festival in
March.

Big Bend Conservation Area
This 16 hectare property
is situated within one of the largest meanders of the Thames River, a
Canadian Heritage River. A short trail takes hikers from the walnut grove
parking lot, along the fishing pond, to the purple martin house. You can
also access the trail from the parking lot by the bridge over the fishing
pond. Visitors can extend their walk and create a loop by walking along the
quiet roads within the conservation area’s camping and picnic areas.
Other features of the
conservation area include: Arn’s Memorial Forest, open space for sports and
games, fishing, and a serviced building with washrooms and showers.

just east of the Village of Wardsville. Follow County Road 2 (Longwoods
Road) east from Wardsville, turn south on Big Bend Road and travel 3 km
to the entrance. |
